Book Description:

Christmas comes but once a year; chaos never ends! Happy Halloween, merry Christmas and joyful Lumpy Rug Day. We didn’t make that up. Lumpy Rug Day is celebrated every May 3, though “celebrated” might be too strong a word. It’s the American way to create a celebration for everything, then turn it into a chore or worse, a nightmare. ’Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate is a collection of humorous essays about holidays, special occasions and other times our celebrations make us feel not-so-celebratory. It’s understanding for those who think Christmas form letters can be honest—or they can be interesting. or eaten all their Halloween candy and had to hand out instant oatmeal packets to their trick-or-treaters.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, in a good way. You know the feeling, you are expecting one thing and getting another.

The collection of Dorothy Rosby’s newspaper articles, which not only focus on Christmas but also holidays in general, is written in a straightforward, unpretentious style and is full of wry, sarcastic, clever humor.

I couldn’t help but feel that we have all been in similar circumstances-feeling inadequate, unprepared, overwhelmed and worn out-as we navigate our way through holidays. I also couldn’t help but feel Rosby was writing from an all too familiar place of experience.

Her writing style brings a feeling of much needed relief from the normal over the top experiences we all want and create for the holidays.

I liked Rosby’s ability to make you feel as though you were having a cup of coffee or tea with her and she was simply chatting with you about the chaos of the holidays.

The humorous short stories had me laughing and reflecting on how to stay away from holiday pitfalls. I found myself saying things like, “Listen to this,” to my family as the stories touched close to home.

I know my goals, expectations and anticipation for the Christmas season are always thwarted by my gradiose ideas that no one could accomplish. I think I’m striving for the excitement and joy that accompanied much more nostalgic times of childhood. In order to avoid slipping into the familial, social and commercial traps, I will now frequently refer back to thisbook. After all, when I was younger, Christmas in particular was low-key but a lot of fun; surely it can be the same now, right?

The “Biff Bam Booza Series” includes Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson’s War at the Ice Cream Store. The book opens with an introduction and QR code, along with details of additional resources available.

Bully Vanilli reigns over the ice cream flavors at The Frozen Frogg Ice Cream Shop on Main Street and enjoys using his influence and notoriety to be a bully. The loneliest of the ice creams, Mustachio Pistachio, is one of his favorite ice creams to bully and harass.

The narrative realistically and eloquently illustrates Bully Vanilli’s reign of terror. The illustrations colorfully and vividly depict life for the ice cream flavors. It got to the point where my two-year-old granddaughter vehemently announced that she DID NOT LIKE Bully Vanilli and wanted to HELP Mustachio Pistachio instead! In addition, she decided that she wanted lots and lots of sprinkles and an honorary mustache.

We enjoyed the story. In hindsight, I believe the g’daughter was a little upset by the bullying. It’s possible that I should have waited till she was a little older since she hasn’t yet experienced, or really heard of, bullying because they haven’t been depicted in our reading material to the same degree as they are in War at the Ice Cream Store. In her little life the world is still a benevolent place.

The tale is filled with cute puns and ice cream names, which will also heighten its appeal to adults. To further enhance the enjoyment of the book, there is also an activity booklet full of fun projects that can be purchased.

What a cute, fun, pun-filled story from Biff, Bam, Booza! My two-year-old granddaughter is thoroughly enjoying these delightful books. She enjoys shouting “BIFF! BAM! BOOZA,” to boot!

Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson are the authors of the book Rocket Red: The Little Red Ant with a Big Dream. All ages will be drawn to this chimerical, fascinating story.

Little Rocket Red, the ant, has BIG aspirations. As readers, we’re given a front-row seat to “Rocket Red’s” dream of being a musician. When Red’s mother calls him to assist in gathering food for his fellow ant community, he and his motley crew of insects are abruptly pulled back to reality while on their way to achieving their goal.

Through the course of the book, several endearing puns—words where ant (or the ant sound) appears in the sentence—are introduced to us. Each word that contains the word “ant” is highlighted in red and has a little red ant above it. Instantly, antennae, antplifier, antertainment and chant are a few of the words we meet.

Red’s life serves as an inspiration for helping others, giving back to family and community, never giving up on dreams and supporting those in need.

There are more materials available as well to enhance the reading experience. Use the QR codes to join the Biff, Bam, Booza club and sing along with Red. You may also use them to find more sing-alongs. Moreover, there is an activity book with puzzles, mazes and other entertaining activities available.

Rusty Goes to Water World (The Adventures of Rusty the Forgotten Fire Engine) by Joe Fisher on Tour with iRead Book Tours Includes Giveaway

Book Series Title: The Adventures of Rusty the Forgotten Fire Engine by Joe Fisher
Category:  Children’s Fiction (Ages 4-8)
Genre:  Children’s Fiction
Publisher:  Angler Publishing
Release date:   May 2017,  August 2021
Content Rating:  G for children.

Books in the Series:

Today’s Highlight: Rusty Goes to Water World

The town of Someport-by-the-Sea wanted to honor Rusty, the Fire Engine, but nowhere seemed appropriate. As the townspeople searched for just the right location to remember Rusty, one location and then another was repeatedly abandoned in the quest to find the perfect place. As time goes on, it seems like nothing will be found as the seasons changed and all they did was talk about it!

Joe Fisher’s Rusty Goes to Water World is a charming sequel to Rusty the Forgotten Fire Engine . It was exciting to experience Rusty’s new journey and adventures.

My two-year-old granddaughter enjoyed following the townspeople as they searched for a fitting place to honor Rusty. When they appeared to give up, she became sad. She also enjoyed when the class visited Water World and wished she could visit somewhere similar to it. She empathized with every aspect of the tale, but I won’t provide any spoilers.

For this narrative, Jaye Boswell also produced the drawings. The images are bright, vivid and colorful. They are cute and aptly portray the children’s adventures at Water World as well as their adventures in the quest to locate a place to name in Rusty’s honor.

The story seems more appropriate for an older age group, in my opinion, than ages 4-8. Young children will, however, delight in the images and the adventures.

The last page of the book outlines all the rides and attractions at Water World. In addition, there is a QR code to find out more about Water World.

My Review Pic for Saving the Seas

In Nancy Carlisle’s Saving the Seas for the Purple and Green, we meet Violet, a young woman whose favorite colors are purple and green. The seas she adores are full of these hues. Violet enjoys running, especially near the ocean. We observe the same things she does as she runs, including the lovely anemones, starfish and harmful unsightly trash.

The structure of the book is dual. The narrative relates Violet’s experiences, while on almost every page, Carlisle provides details about marine life, the effects of plastic on the ocean, recycling and the urgency of preserving our ecosystem.

As a plus, Nancy Carlisle is the illustrator, too. Her drawings are beautiful and ingenious, drawing you into the story, beginning with the cover’s delightfully wonderful coloring.

In addition to asking many questions about plastics and how they harm the poor turtles and sea jellies, my two-year-old granddaughter made running comments about the drawings. She thoroughly enjoyed the story. The book’s target audience is 3-7-year-olds, but the sidebars, by contrast, seemed to be aimed at older youngsters, broadening its appeal.

Carlisle calls attention to a much-needed conversation about how we can protect our oceans in a clear-cut, comprehensive and understandable approach that incorporates a variety of resources.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Today’s Highlight The Adventures of Rusty The Forgotten Fire Engine

My Review

The Adventures of Rusty the Forgotten Fire Engine is a charmingly sweet story. Rusty was once known as “Reddy, the ready Fire Engine.” But one day, Reddy was no longer so red. In fact, he was quite rusty! From then on he was mocked and teased for being old and no longer useful.

The story of Rusty helps teach children that usefulness is not lost and does not disappear because of being “old and out of shape,” as it were.

The illustrations by Jaye Boswell are bright, whimsical and appealing, adding plenty of engagement for youngsters.

My two-year-old granddaughter enjoyed the story immensely. The winsome prose drew her immediately into the story. The adorable illustrations led to many questions and exclamations. We broke the story into two nighttime adventures because she was so enthralled with it!

The target market is ages 4-8, however, I think both younger and older children will enjoy the story, too.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Book Description:

When the Mayor Himself decides the town of Someport-by-the-Sea needs a new

fire engine the Fire Chief picks a shiny, bright red one that has all the latest tools needed to put out fires. The new fire engine becomes the joy of the children in town and the pride of the fireman and townspeople alike.

But after many years the fire engine becomes old and worn until everyone begins to laugh and call it Rusty. Sad and forlorn Rusty is ignored and forgotten. Then during the 4th of July parade in a summer like no other Rusty saves the day in a most surprising and unusual way.

Rusty the Forgotten Fire Engine tells the story of a fire engine and the fireman and boy who love him. It is a lighthearted and multi-layered story, richly told, that will appeal to children and adults alike.

Whimsical illustrations create an air of fantasy, drawing children into Rusty’s world while stimulating their imaginations as they follow Rusty’s journey from hero to outcast and back again.

The surprise ending brings the tale to a heart-warming and satisfying conclusion that reveals all things

Q&A with Joe Fisher

What kind of research did you do for this book, if any?

This is a better question directed to my illustrator partner Jaye Boswell. I don’t do any research per se just let my imagination run wild. Jaye on the other hand has to take real things like a fire engine or calliope and make it come to life. So she samples pictures and representations on the internet and then translates the machines and people into her own whimsical style. As a person whose art talent ended with stick figures I admire how she creates characters from anthropomorphized machines and quirky human figures. I’ve told a story but Jaye creates a demimonde.

Do you travel to schools doing book readings of Rusty?

Yes Jaye and I welcome opportunities to go to schools and libraries, wherever children congregate, to read our books. But practically we can only go to schools that are in a reasonable distance. So we have created several ways we can reach out to schools and libraries at a distance. First we put the books into a PowerPoint format so a teacher can read the book to their students. We also send a free book when we send a teacher or school the PowerPoint Presentation so they have all the materials to do the reading and use it over and over again. As a follow on to that we are working on a zoom option where Jaye and I can do remote readings.

Let add it is our policy to send free books to children’s hospitals. For more about school readings and hospital book gifts, please see JoeFisherBooks.com

Any merchandise coming out soon? A plush fire-engine perhaps? Or kids water bottle with Rusty coming soon?

Not yet but we have given it some thought. Our feeling is that the Adventures of Rusty the Forgotten Fire Engine provide a good platform for toys such as the machines, Rusty Calliope, Snowplow, etc, the people like Fireman Jim, the Mayor Himself, Mr. Spritz the manager of Rusty’s Water World and the environment like Water World with all its rides and attractions. Please contact me through JoeFisherBooks.com if any of your audience is interested in this idea.

Do you have other projects you are working on?

Of course my illustrator partner Jaye Boswell and I are working on the next book in the Adventures of Rusty the Forgotten Fire Engine, Rusty and Calliope.

In addition, I have another illustrated children’s book coming out this fall, titled Ospreys in the Outfield: A Sanibel Story. This time I partnered with a gifted young wildlife illustrator May Jernigan.

The book tells the story of two Ospreys, Ophelia and Oliver, who want nothing more than to find a quiet place to build a nest and raise a family. After some false starts they think they have found a perfect spot, in the lights that surround the ball field next to Sanibel School. Perfect until Little League season opens and disturbs their tranquil place. What happens next proves it takes a village and the Golden Rule to play baseball when there are Ospreys in the Outfield.

For more information about this and other books please check JoeFisherBooks.com

When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

I am an inveterate traveler so much of my non-writing time is spent planning and arranging my next trip. Many of these expeditions can take on a life of their own – trekking in the Himalayas, hiking in remote and inhospitable areas of the Congo or scuba diving in the Solomon Islands.

For fun, I collect things, like butterflies or seashells and I am addicted to ebay auctions.

Book Spotlight

In the mid-1960s, Gary Orleck bumped into a friend from college. The student was from Iran, a country most Americans had never heard of. Gary didn’t know it at the time, but his friend was from the wealthiest family in the world. He asked Gary to join him that following summer to drive through Europe—his friend offering to be his tour guide since he knew Europe like the back of his hand.

At first, Gary was hesitant because of his friend’s perceived reputation, but he was very persuasive, promising to be the best tour guide ever. Reluctantly, Gary agreed, which led to the most mind-blowing experience—a ten-week trip through 12 countries and 19,920 miles of earth-shattering adventures that included turning a ship around in the middle of an ocean, dining with the King and Queen of Denmark, and the King and Queen of Belgium, meeting The Who backstage, being entertained by the Empress of Iran Empress Farah in Paris, gambling with the Shah of Iran in Monte Carlo, and even being rescued by Shirley Temple Black after being arrested during the Czechoslovakian Revolution in the summer of 1968.

Gary says, “It took ten years for me to process that trip—five years of research plus five years of writing—because I wished to share the greatest adventure a young naïve boy from Rhode Island could ever imagine happening. So, fasten your seat belts for a ride inside the elite world of the rich and famous and join me on the trip of my lifetime. A trip you will never forget. I promise you that!”

Meet the Author:

I grew up in Lincoln, R.I. which is a blue-collar town, went To Babson University School of Business, and graduated with a BSBA in 1966. I worked my way around the USA for six months.

Two years later, I traveled with the son of the richest man in the world – covering 19,988 miles, twelve countries, and ten weeks.

Then, I went to work at Broadway Tire Inc. Twenty years later, I bought the business. I then owned and operated it for thirty more years before retiring in 2016!

In Between, I met and married my wife Ronna and had two beautiful children, and now I have five grandchildren!

The love of travel remained with me, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited 75 countries – each in a unique style – all my own way, using much of which I learned in my travels with Maurice in 1968.

Olive goodnight

Oh my, Olive and the Valentine’s Spell is such an adorable story, and the illustrations are just delightful.

Helen Millman has written a sweet, sweet story about Olive, a young boy who hears about Valentine’s Day at school and is terrified of having to marry. The poor little boy’s imagination then leads him on a roller coaster of emotions, the most prominent of which is fear.

I appreciated how the little boy in the book was able to freely open up to his mother about his anxieties and how she calmed him. She then gently helps him realize he has nothing to be afraid of.

Because there were a few new vocabulary words introduced to my almost two-year-old granddaughter in the story, it was a little above her comprehension level at times. On the other hand, she loved the story and Vanessa Alexandre’s enchanting artwork. She even requested that I re-read it several times!

The book is intended for children aged 3–7 years old. Older children and adults may enjoy the narrative and perhaps remember their own feelings regarding Valentine’s Day. I’m sure it will make everyone, young and old, smile.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Meet the Author:

Children’s author Helen Millman is a loving wife and mom. Her three young boys continually inspire her with their wild adventures and vivid imaginations. They even helped inspire her to write her new book, Olive and the Valentine’s Spell!

While living in Vero Beach, FL, she spends her time writing, reading, singing, and growing through her life’s experiences. She knows the importance of “seeing the bright side of life” and encourages her readers to “choose love, even when it seems impossible”. A friendly, optimist Helen has always loved to read to her own children and remembers how much her imaginative voices really helped bring the stories to life. She invites her readers to gather with a beloved book, for it truly is one of the best places to snuggle, giggle, imagine, and make unforgettable memories – together.

Book Title:  Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine by Beverley Reichman

Genre: Children’s Book
Publisher:  Book Baby
Release date:  January, 2022
Tour dates: February 1 to February 14, 2022
Content Rating:  Rated G. Suitable for everyone

Book Description:

Cindi isn’t sure about this holiday called Valentine’s Day, but after her people pair dress her up like a flamingo and take her for a walk in front of her friends, and her handsome new neighbor dog, Chip, she doesn’t like it at all! She and her BFF, Pitty Pat, have been watching Chip ever since he moved next door. She wants to meet him, but not like this! Have you ever changed your mind about something? In this outrageously funny story, meet some of Cindi’s fur-friends and find out if she changes her mind about Valentine’s Day.

Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine is an especially SPECIAL book because it features 17 pets that were chosen as winners in the Cindi Features a New Friend contest last summer.  As you can imagine, their ‘people families’ are beyond excited about their pets being part of the story.  They had over 750 pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, hedgehogs, and even a chicken, goat, donkey and monkey enter the contest!

Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine was a hit with my almost 2-year-old granddaughter and me. She was particularly taken with it because she had been learning about Valentine’s Day and ” helping” decorate the house.

The story centers around Cindi, a dog, and her friend Pitty Pat, a cat. They are quite outraged when they are dressed up for Valentine’s Day, especially since they might run into Chip, Cindi’s new neighbor. Oh, the embarrassment!

Beverley Reichman did an excellent job of mixing a variety of animals into the story. The part I really appreciated was the illustrator’s depiction of the different dogs. Dogs of all kinds, shapes and sizes were there, including those in doggie wheelchairs and one with two distinctly different colored eyes. What a lovely method to illustrate and introduce physical differences and impairments to children.

Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine is a pleasant, sweet story with appealing, innovative pictures that will be pleasing to both children and adults.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Meet the Author:

Beverley Reichman is a devoted mom, retired elementary school teacher and author. She co-authored her first book, Justice and Honor for My Sister: The Story of Margie Grey in 2018 and published her first children’s book, Kevin Can, in 2019. The second book in her Kevin series, Kevin is a Smart Cookie, and the first book in her popular Cindi the Teenie Chiweenie series were published in 2020. Her delightful and beautifully illustrated Cindi book series include: Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine, Cindi and Sparkles Howl-oween Ghoulfriends and Cindi’s Christmas Kitten Surprise, which earned a 5-Star Readers’ Favorite review.

Beverley teaches, tutors, and mentors children and shares with them her passion for learning, literature, living in faith, and experiencing life to its fullest. Beverley currently resides outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Book Description:

During the day, the Miller family’s Christmas tree stands tall in their living room, sparkling with lights and ornaments. Little does the family know that their Christmas tree is anything but ordinary. Each evening, the magic of Christmas brings their tree to life—much to the delight of Hannah and William Miller. Follow along as Hannah and William experience the magic of Christmas in a whole new way.

This was a delightful Christmas tale. It reminded me of one of our daughters when she was younger. Her dolls and stuffed animals, she believed, came to life at night! This story, as well as the creativity it would have inspired in her, would have been ideal for her.

The Living Christmas Tree, by Kristin Sponaugle, introduces us to Hannah and William, siblings who are eagerly awaiting Christmas. One night, Hannah discovers that the decorations come to life after everyone has gone to bed. Unable to keep the secret, she shares it with her brother, and the two of them have such merriment and entertainment night after night during the Christmas season.

Agus Prajogo’s illustrations are vibrant and colorful, with a hint of whimsy and fantasy that is sure to enchant young children.

The book is recommended and appropriate for ages 3 to 7, and it is an excellent story for beginning readers.
