Summer Bride: A Sweet Romance Novella (Holiday Brides Book 2) by Shanna Hatfield

My Review

I LOVE to read sequels to books, especially when there are delightfully quirky characters like Matilda and Ruth (you may remember them from Valentine Bride). Chills of excitement ran through me when I saw the second Holiday Brides Book by Shanna Hatfield was being released, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Summer Bride returns to Golden Skies Retirement Village in Holiday, Oregon, where Sage Presley works as a receptionist and Justin James is working as a temporary electrician. Leave it to resident’s Ruth and Matilda’s matchmaking antenna to sense two lonely people. They then get busy, enlisting others, to help with their matchmaking. A persnickety cat and an adorable baby calf named Fred Asteer add to the enjoyment and help with the matchmaking, too.

There is only one problem with their plan; Sage decided long ago that as long as she has Shane, her teenage brother, to care for, she is NOT getting romantically involved with someone, and she’s definitely not getting married.

A cute, fun read, not without it’s serious and sometimes sad moments, Summer Bride is one story you don’t want to miss.

The end of the book includes information on how the parts of the book came into being-an interesting and enlightening addition.

I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of the book. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Publisher’s Summary

Two octogenarians won’t stop until they make a match. . .

Sage Presley loves her job as the receptionist at Golden Skies Retirement Village in Holiday, Oregon. She enjoys the residents and their wisdom, even if some of them are more than a little quirky. Determined to ignore the matchmaking efforts of two women at the retirement home, Sage’s sole focus is on raising her brother, Shane. In spite of her best efforts, she can’t help but notice the hunky electrician who continually comes to her rescue.

Grateful for the opportunity to open his own electrical business, Justin James moves to Holiday full of plans and dreams. He’s quickly drawn in by the close-knit community, but finds the lack of suitable single women disturbing. Despite himself, his attention is captured by the receptionist at the retirement home where he’s working on a big job. Yet, he can’t begin to understand why two matchmaking octogenarians are intent on forcing him together with the woman he’s convinced is married.

A sweet romance novella sprinkled with humor, hope, and the meaning of real love, Summer Bride will warm the hearts of readers while bringing them a smile.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Cowboys Of SummerTitle: Cowboys of Summer
Authors: Mary Connealy, Lorna Seilstad, Cheryl St. John, Missy Tippens, Tina Radcliffe & Sherri Shackelford
Release Date: May 1, 2018
Genre: Sweet Contemporary Romance

As the summer weather sizzles, relax by the pool with stirring tales of handsome cowboys and the spirited ladies who wrangle them into romance. Six of Christian fiction’s most beloved authors join forces to bring you a collection of humorous, romantic and heartfelt novellas set against the sultry heat of summer.

In Mary Connealy’s, “Dr. Tess and the Cowboy”, sparks fly when Dr. Tessa Rhoades discovers dinosaur bones on Joe Holt’s ranch and decides to excavate—even if that means kicking Joe off his own land.

In “Hometown Girl” by Cheryl St.John, injured rodeo champion Justin Cooper returns to the sleepy Oklahoma town he escaped for fame and fortune–and takes his biggest tumble yet–straight into the arms of Stevie Marshall, his first love who soon has him questioning his life choices.

In Tina Radcliffe’s, “Lake Effect”, cynical cowboy Tucker Jackson knows he’s in trouble when he starts counting the days until the end of summer and praying ‘summer girl’ Jessica Richards will find a home for her heart in Paradise.

In “His Lone Star Heart” by Missy Tippens, rancher Zeb West tries hard not to fall for Beecher Brown, the feisty but off-limits sister of his best friend. As she tries to prove she’s capable of running her family’s ranch–the one he’s trying to buy–he might just find he’s met his match…for life.

Will Lorna Seilstad’s characters make “Great Strides” when Dana Etherton, the owner of a horse therapy ranch, must choose between the kids she serves and Adam Malone, the embezzler who’s been assigned to do community service there?

When Paige Monroe agrees to draw the press away from a country star’s wedding by pretending to be the look-alike bride, she wasn’t counting on having very real feeling for her decoy fiancé, Sterling Tanner. In Sherri Shackelford’s, “The Decoy Bride”, two people feigning love forget they’re acting.

My Thoughts

Cowboys of Summer is a perfect set of stories to enjoy during the summer months. Each story is just long enough to whisk you away into romance, but short enough you can read it while sitting on your porch swing enjoying a cool summer breeze.

The stories are sure to hold your attention, as you laugh, cry and wonder why! There are impressive and exciting stories that include cowboys. Some you would never imagine, such as the story about a paleontologist, or the one about a couple pretending to be a famous couple, in order for the famous couple to have privacy. My favorite dealt with Hippotherapy (the use of horse riding as a therapeutic or rehabilitative treatment, especially as a means of improving coordination, balance, and strength, https://en.oxforddictionaries.com). I enjoy horses, and members of my family work with physically and mentally handicapped, and I have volunteered on occasion, making this a subject near and dear to my heart.

I was familiar with a few of the authors, but there were several whose stories I haven’t had the pleasure of reading before. (Some of the stories have a PG theme as they deal with characters having an alcoholic drink, and a slightly risqué daydream). Nonetheless, I enjoyed the stories.

So, grab your favorite cuppa, find your favorite chair then sit back and prepare to be entertained as you read Cowboys of Summer.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from JustRead Publicity Tours. However, I was under no obligation to post a review, nor was a positive review required.

Valentine Bride: A Sweet Romance Novella (Holiday Brides Book 1) by Shanna Hatfield

My Review

What a fun novella to read. Shanna Hatfield’s first story about the city of Holiday is sometimes whimsical and silly. However, everything, at least for a while, isn’t coming up roses for her characters.

Fynlee Dale’s grandmother is droll and entertaining and manages to keep poor Fynlee on her toes while she tries to save herself and others from her grandmother’s lovable and laughable schemes.

Carson Ford’s aunt, Ruth, moves into the same retirement home where Fynlee’s grandmother, Matilda lives. Carson has his hands full, too, with his aunt and her escapades with Matilda.

I had only read two and a half pages before I was spontaneously laughing hysterically, picturing Matilda as she was described. The Valentine Bride is a fun, adorably imaginative and creative story. The novella opens with Fynlee having to leave work to rescue her grandmother from another typical escapade, and it keeps you on a wild roller coaster ride from there. Toss Carson’s shrewish girlfriend, the other residents at Golden Skies (the retirement home), and some situations that leave Fynlee, Matilda and Ruth understandably confused into the mix, and you have a wild ride on your hands. You’ll find yourself excited for the characters when things are going at a steady pace. Your heart will plummet when things seem to be out of control. Then you will coast into the ending with a smile as things straighten out with a little help from friends.

I received the book from the author. However, I was under no obligation to write a review.

Publisher’s Summary

Two unlikely matchmakers set the stage for love…

Fynlee Dale returns to Holiday to take care of her wacky grandmother. Although it means giving up her dreams of a career and husband, she needs to be there for Grams.

Carson Ford vows to take care of his elderly aunt after buying her ranch. Comfortable with all aspects of his life, his world turns upside down when he meets a woman who’s impossible to forget.

They find themselves in the midst of a plot by two scheming old women determined to make them fall in love.

Valentine Bride is a funny, sweet romance novella given a liberal dose of humor through a cast of colorful characters intertwined around a heartwarming love story.
