Within Golden Bands (A Home for My Heart Book 2) by Norma Gail

Within Golden Bands, Norma Gail’s newest book, transports you to the beautiful area of Loch Garry in Scotland where the main characters, Bonny and Kieran MacDonell, live. The descriptions portray a peaceful, calm and tranquil area. However, it is anything but for Bonny and Kieran.

I was unaware that Within Golden Bands was the sequel to Land of My Dreams. I found though, that except for one or two small exceptions, I was able to follow the story quite easily.

The book is full of action, suspense, mystery and intrigue, along with following the honeymoon and getting to know one another phase of the MacDonell’s lives.

There were several things I appreciated about the story. For instance, the way Gail describes a devastating but very real loss and its effects on both the characters and their family and friends. The faith storyline was skillfully written without self-righteousness or holier than thou. Nonetheless, there were several aspects of the book I struggled with. I could not comprehend how any one person, much less two, could bear up under the constant, non-stop onslaught of pain, tragedy, fear and horror in this story. Some of the more descriptive pages of the aforementioned horror are truly horrific.

I would caution anyone with PTSD or other such difficulties that there are several heartbreaking and heart-stopping scenes.

I received this book from the author. However, I was under no obligation to write a review.

Unveiling the Past by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Kim Vogel Sawyer’s newest book, Unveiling the Past, is a multi-layered, multifaceted book. However, even though there is more than one story woven throughout the pages, it is not overly complex or complicated.

I’ve never read a mystery/suspense storyline by Sawyer and did not realize this was a sequel. I still enjoyed it very much.

The protagonists are determined to get to the bottom of the mysteries surrounding their own lives and the lives of those who need their help. Their persistence is admirable.

Sawyer also introduces a spiritual element that is hard to resist. She doesn’t browbeat you or use hellfire and brimstone to get her message across. She just gently introduces it as a vital element in the lives of the main characters, then lets their lives speak for their faith. The degree to which she weaves it seamlessly and effortlessly into the story is creditable.

Unveiling the Past has a few unsettling scenes for anyone who has difficulty reading such occurrences or events. (I have PTSD and a few scenes were slightly disturbing to me, but I was able to read the entire book.)

I am now looking forward to purchasing and reading the first book in the series, Bringing Maggie Home.

I received the book from Waterbrook. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Guest Post from Cara

Delayed Justice was a hard story to write.

I’d known from Beyond Justice that Jaime had a hard story, but I wasn’t sure exactly what it was. She tried to hide from her past. She tried hard, but in the end, it slowly spilled out. A young girl wounded deeply by someone who should protect her. And now as a professional young woman, Jaime is still fighting the shadows.

She believes she’s okay, or as okay as she’ll ever be.

Instead, she has to learn that there’s so much more waiting for her. Freedom from the chains of a past she didn’t choose. A love that will never end. And a God who has always loved her even when she questions His existence because of her past.

I think we’ve all lived that. There’s a place in our hearts that seems beyond His reach. For some of us, it’s a barrier to knowing Him. To others of us, it makes us question what we thought we knew about God. And for others of us, it presses us deeply into Him. Jaime’s book, Delayed Justice, explores this space. The space, where some days we scream at the heavens Where are you, God? And the days we just curl into ourselves because life is too hard.

And in that space of shadow and light, God ultimately shines brightest. This is a truth that is slowly revealed through friends and The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Wildfire (Peril in the Park Book 3) by Gayla K Hiss

My Review

Gayla Hiss’s newest novel in the Peril in the Park Series, Wildfire, is a breath-taking story. I encountered this timely, riveting read as the decimating western fires dominate the news.

Rachael Woodston is a college professor and a wildfire researcher. She has developed a program to help predict the many variables, such as wind and speed, that can affect the fire’s course.

Dylan Veracruz is the leader of a firefighting crew. The last thing he or his team need is a seemingly hotshot college teacher getting in their way while they try to fight forest fires, and he definitely doesn’t need her trying to tell him how to do his job. He knows how fires work; he’s on the line working against them whenever and wherever they pop up within his region.

I related emotionally to all the firefighters and the wildfire researchers when repeated, intractable fires kept springing up in the beautiful Rocky Mountain area for no apparent reason.

I appreciated how the characters were at different stages in their Christian lives. Some of the characters, even having gone through some sad situations, are still close to God. Other characters, having gone through similar tragedies, struggle with their faith, feeling science provides more answers. As the plot moves along, so does their journey toward mature belief. The story isn’t preachy. Each person’s viewpoint seems a natural outgrowth of their circumstances and perceptions. I admired how they allowed their opinions to be challenged without rejecting faith outright.

Wildfires tension, twists and unique situations had me thoroughly engrossed, trying to guess the eventual outcome. A truly captivating story, delving deeply into the warrior mentality of the people whose calling is to place their own lives between ours and imminent fiery destruction.

I applaud the investigatory process, as it is very evident throughout the book. In addition, there are some fascinating facts and resources in the back of the book.

I received the book from the author. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Publisher’s Summary

Will Rachael and Dylan escape the fire’s fury, or perish in the flames?

Sparks fly when wildfire researcher Rachael Woodston clashes with firefighter Dylan Veracruz in Rocky Mountain National Park. The June fire season has just begun, yet a long-standing drought has already turned the national park into a tinderbox. Rachael’s computer data indicates the fire Dylan’s crew is fighting is about to accelerate, but he doesn’t believe her—until the fire suddenly gets out of control and they have to evacuate.

Suspecting arson, Rachael and Dylan join forces in search of answers and soon discover that chasing fires isn’t all they have in common—they’re both survivors who’ve tragically lost loved ones. However, their difference of opinion about faith keeps them at arm’s length, despite a growing attraction. As the danger escalates, Rachael and Dylan soon find themselves in a firestorm they cannot escape. All seems lost until Rachael has a profound encounter that restores her faith and gives her hope. The close call also fuels her determination to stop the fiend behind the flames.

But can she and Dylan solve the mystery and extinguish their enemy before disaster strikes again?
