Wildfire (Peril in the Park Book 3) by Gayla K Hiss

My Review

Gayla Hiss’s newest novel in the Peril in the Park Series, Wildfire, is a breath-taking story. I encountered this timely, riveting read as the decimating western fires dominate the news.

Rachael Woodston is a college professor and a wildfire researcher. She has developed a program to help predict the many variables, such as wind and speed, that can affect the fire’s course.

Dylan Veracruz is the leader of a firefighting crew. The last thing he or his team need is a seemingly hotshot college teacher getting in their way while they try to fight forest fires, and he definitely doesn’t need her trying to tell him how to do his job. He knows how fires work; he’s on the line working against them whenever and wherever they pop up within his region.

I related emotionally to all the firefighters and the wildfire researchers when repeated, intractable fires kept springing up in the beautiful Rocky Mountain area for no apparent reason.

I appreciated how the characters were at different stages in their Christian lives. Some of the characters, even having gone through some sad situations, are still close to God. Other characters, having gone through similar tragedies, struggle with their faith, feeling science provides more answers. As the plot moves along, so does their journey toward mature belief. The story isn’t preachy. Each person’s viewpoint seems a natural outgrowth of their circumstances and perceptions. I admired how they allowed their opinions to be challenged without rejecting faith outright.

Wildfires tension, twists and unique situations had me thoroughly engrossed, trying to guess the eventual outcome. A truly captivating story, delving deeply into the warrior mentality of the people whose calling is to place their own lives between ours and imminent fiery destruction.

I applaud the investigatory process, as it is very evident throughout the book. In addition, there are some fascinating facts and resources in the back of the book.

I received the book from the author. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Publisher’s Summary

Will Rachael and Dylan escape the fire’s fury, or perish in the flames?

Sparks fly when wildfire researcher Rachael Woodston clashes with firefighter Dylan Veracruz in Rocky Mountain National Park. The June fire season has just begun, yet a long-standing drought has already turned the national park into a tinderbox. Rachael’s computer data indicates the fire Dylan’s crew is fighting is about to accelerate, but he doesn’t believe her—until the fire suddenly gets out of control and they have to evacuate.

Suspecting arson, Rachael and Dylan join forces in search of answers and soon discover that chasing fires isn’t all they have in common—they’re both survivors who’ve tragically lost loved ones. However, their difference of opinion about faith keeps them at arm’s length, despite a growing attraction. As the danger escalates, Rachael and Dylan soon find themselves in a firestorm they cannot escape. All seems lost until Rachael has a profound encounter that restores her faith and gives her hope. The close call also fuels her determination to stop the fiend behind the flames.

But can she and Dylan solve the mystery and extinguish their enemy before disaster strikes again?

Guest Post from Dana Mentink

I’ve spent a bit of time in emergency rooms lately. Not to complain, mind you. The asthma related treatments worked like a charm and we were blessed by good care, so I am grateful. There’s a bonus, too. The emergency room is a great place for people watching! Hour upon hour I spent surveying patients, relatives, nurses and doctors. I came away pondering what it must be like to work in the strange bustle that is an emergency room. That’s where character Shannon Livingston was born.

The E.R doc and nurses must be brilliant problem solvers with nerves of steel because they never know what will roll through their doors. Since they are not responsible for follow up care, they have only a short term relationship with their patients. But what would happen, my fictional mind wanted to know, if one emergency room treatment ensnared Shannon in a “run for your life” scenario? And what if her incredible life saving skills weren’t nearly enough to save her own life, or the baby she’s suddenly become responsible for? Ah me! The perfect scenario for a suspense novel, no? I hope you enjoy Cowboy Bodyguard. I can promise it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

Guest Post from Toni Shiloh

Hey there, Reader Friends!

I’m so excited for the kickoff of Enduring Love. This is book 3 in the Maple Run series and features the story of Belle Peterson and Micah Campbell. You may remember meeting Micah in book 2 of the series, he is Luke Robinson’s best friend. I tell you, this book has a special place in my heart, one that brought out all the emotions in me.

Belle Peterson is living a life filled with shame and regret. She knows mentally that she’s been forgiven, but can’t reconcile the fact to how a redeemed life should look. And when Micah Campbell walks in her life, she’s certain that she has to stay as far from him as possible to keep from backsliding.

Y’all know our wants rarely meet with reality. I had fun throwing Belle and Micah together in Maple Run. Sometimes to their chagrin but always to my pleasure. J Characters from Buying Love (book 1) and Finding Love (book 2) will make an appearance, rounding out the family that has been created in my fictional town of Maple Run, Virginia.

As you take the time to read Belle and Micah’s story, I pray you keep this verse in your mind. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” – Romans 8:1 KJV

God does not want us to live a life of shame and guilt. Once we ask for forgiveness, He gives it to us freely. Walk in an abundant life, my friends, and bless others with the grace you so freely received.

Blessings to you,

Toni

The Greatest Is Love (The Men Of Freeman Book 1) by Kitra Kaspar

My Review

Joey Winters, a new doctor, is thrilled when she lands a job in Freeman, Oklahoma with the Doctors for Rural Oklahoma Program. However, she plans to stay the two years she is required by contract, then she’s shaking the dust off her feet for a job as a surgeon in a big city.

The Greatest is Love deals with some very difficult, but very true to life problems a lot of women, and some men, experience. Dr. Joey can’t seem to get past these problems. Her need for control and skepticism of God hinders her healing.

I appreciated how life-altering situations were addressed, also that this wasn’t a typical romance and most of the story was very realistic. Two things that were problematic for me, however. First, the author kept switching, even within the same paragraph, between addressing Joey as Joey and addressing her as the doctor. The first few times, I wasn’t even sure she was referring to Joey, but had no idea who else it could be. Because of this, I was jarred out of the story quite frequently. The second problem occurred when Joey had conflicting thoughts. The conflicting thoughts were narrated as “voices” that engaged in dialogue within Joey’s mind. For instance, “One voice said…,” and “Replied another voice…” “One voice asked…,” and “The other voice repeated…” Joey’s “voice dialogues” jarred me out of the flow of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I wouldn’t recommend this book to pre-teens and below due to some of the subject matter, such as child abuse.

Disclosure:  I received a free copy of this book/eBook/Product to review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC Regulations. I am part of The CWA Review Crew.

Publisher’s Summary

What happens when city doctor Joey Winters meets country lawyer Brad Freeman? Nothing, because Joey is determined to stay unattached. Rural Freeman, Oklahoma is not in her life plan, which means falling for a handsome small-town lawyer is out of the question. Too bad she forgot to tell her heart. However, when Joey’s painful past haunts her, she realizes she will never have a meaningful relationship with any man unless she battles her demons. She knows she needs help but believes God abandoned her long ago. Add in a gorgeous banker named Evan, and the doctor’s life seems to spin out of control. Can Joey trust in God? Does He even care about her?

A Place to Call Home (Front Porch Promises Book 1) by Merrillee Whren

Synopsis

STARTING OVER

After serving six years in prison for the false charge of manslaughter in the death of his wife, Kurt Jansen must overcome a world of bitterness if he wants to start a new life. But his first priority is securing a restoration job to pay a private investigator to find the real killer and a lawyer to get his kids back.

Hiring a convicted wife-killer isn’t what kind-hearted Molly Finnerty bargains for as part of the prison ministry she supports. However, she begins to believe Kurt’s claim of innocence and gradually finds a great deal to like about him—perhaps more to like than she should.

Can they overcome the past and find forgiveness and love?

My Review

Imagine being convicted of a crime you didn’t commit. Then to add insult to injury you are ordered to stay away from your children, even after you have served your time. This is Kurt Jansen’s life! My heart ached for him, even as I rejoiced in Molly Finnerty’s kindness in giving him a second chance.

Molly’s life isn’t entirely on the up and up, either. However, her need for Kurt to restore the home she bought and turn it into a bed and breakfast is genuine.

Merrillee Whren’s book, A Place to Call Home, is rich with forgiveness, second chances, and redemption. I enjoyed reading it, not only for the redemptive qualities but also for the renovations aspect-a topic dear to my heart.

I bought A Place to Call Home earlier. However, I also received a copy through Celebrate Lit; I was not obligated to provide a review.

Promises Renewed (The Potter’s House Books, Book 5) by Mary Manners

My Review

Mary Manners scores again with her latest book, featuring Brianna Caufield and Jackson Reed.

Brianna loved Jackson with all her heart when they were teenagers. However, life, circumstances and the enticement of a pro football career shatters her dreams of marriage and a family. She doesn’t let the loss keep her down. She finishes school and starts a youth center for the kids in her hometown.

Mary Manners has written a book with a lot of depth and meaning. She deals with young love, loss and healing. Through Brianna and Jackson’s lives, she shows how others are affected by decisions that were taken out of their hands, how faith is so necessary to life and how forgiveness is crucial to being able to move on and forward in life.

I enjoyed Promises Renewed  because, unlike novellas which only give a small snapshot of the characters, a novel tells the complete story. We’re able to understand decisions made, even if we don’t agree with them and we come to care genuinely for the individuals concerned.

Promises Renewed is book 5 of The Potter’s House Books. There are currently five of 21 available, this one being released on the 22nd of May; the others will be released through 2019. Each book is a standalone and is designed so they can be read in any order you wish.

I received this book from the author, Mary Manners. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Publisher’s Summary

A heartbreaking secret stands between Brianna and Jackson, and she plans to keep it that way…

When Brianna Caufield hosts an online auction to raise money for her fledgling youth center, the last thing she expects is to be matched for a date with Jackson Reed. Lured by the fame of an NFL career, the hometown hero and all-star quarterback broke off their engagement without so much as a backward glance. Now, washed-up and wiser, Jack’s come home with renewed faith and a changed heart—and he wants Brianna back. No matter how much she still cares for Jackson,

Brianna knows the secret she harbors will destroy any chance of a future together. Can Jack find a way to coax the secret to the surface? And if he does, will forgiveness draw them closer together…or will their love be shattered?

The Reluctant Groom (Brides of Seattle Book 1) by Kimberly Rose Johnson

My Review

Kimberly Rose Johnson’s book, The Reluctant Groom, is book one in the Brides of Seattle series, which begins with a curious premise. Ray O’Brien’s grandfather stipulated, in his will, that Ray must be married before his twenty-eighth birthday. If not, he loses ownership of his gym.

Katie Fairchild is losing her apartment because her best friend is getting married. One day, without thinking, she off-handedly comments to Ray that he could marry her.

A marriage of convenience is not something you usually read about in a contemporary novel. However, Johnson has written a believable and plausible story.

When you throw in a snobbish future mother-in-law for Katie, a darling precocious niece for Ray, Katie’s absentee mom and the pressure of having to marry for Ray, you get a myriad of feelings – from confusion and fear to frustration and anger. It all becomes a perfect recipe for disaster. Yet, somehow it all works out when God is first and foremost.

The Reluctant Groom is a sweet story, but not without its sadness, too. Johnson has done a great job of writing likable, relatable characters in a tale typically reserved for historical fiction. I can’t wait to read future books in the series.

I received the book from the author. However, I was under no obligation to write a review.

Publisher’s Summary

When everything goes wrong, can two friends discover true love?

When Ray O’Brien’s world is turned upside down, Katie Fairchild wants to help, but the personal cost is high. Neither desires a marriage of convenience, but when Katie blurts the first thing that comes to her mind Ray can’t dismiss her offer of marriage. It would solve all his problems except for one thing—they aren’t in love.

Can these two friends team up for the greater good and perhaps find love along the way, or are their expectations impossible?
