This Year, Christmas Comes Just in Time

As a first-year law associate, Sydney Batson knows she will be updating her resume by New Year’s if she loses her current court case. So when her grandmother gets inexplicably ill while she’s in court, Sydney arranges for a cab to get her to the clinic.

The last thing cab driver Finn Parrish wants is to be saddled with a wheelchair-bound old lady with dementia. But because Miss Callie reminds him of his own mother, whom he failed miserably in her last days, he can’t say no when she keeps calling him for rides. Once a successful gourmet chef, Finn’s biggest concern now is making his rent, but half the time Callie doesn’t remember to pay him. And as she starts to feel better, she leads him on wild goose chases to find a Christmas date for her granddaughter.

When Finn meets Sydney, he’s quite sure that she’s never needed help finding a date. Does Miss Callie have an ulterior motive, or is this just a mission-driven by delusions? He’s willing to do whatever he can to help fulfill Callie’s Christmas wish. He just never expected to be a vital part of it.

Oh, my! How can I do this story justice?

I did not know what I wanted to do with Finn Parish, a cab driver fighting the Uber takeover. The beginning did not disclose this seemingly anti-hero’s character. I wanted to shake him, read him the riot act and scream at him, “Have a little compassion, man!!!”

I sympathized and was also frustrated with Sydney Batson. Seriously, how many women, even single women, juggle with trying to do too much while riddled with guilt? Nonetheless, there are responsibilities that can’t and shouldn’t be dropped!

Then, my goodness, there was the unflappable, thoroughly loveable and genial Miss Callie! How I loved this wonderful woman, grandmother to Sydney. Her wisdom and Godliness resonated throughout the entire story.

Catching Christmas is not your typical Terri Blackstock novel. I truly wasn’t sure what to expect as Blackstock’s books are usually in the faith-filled suspense, thriller genre. However, Catching Christmas focuses on the days before, and leading up to Christmas from three very unique perspectives.

I treasure Catching Christmas, a book I will read and relish for years to come and not only during the Christmas season.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit and NetGalley. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Promises Renewed (The Potter’s House Books, Book 5) by Mary Manners

My Review

Mary Manners scores again with her latest book, featuring Brianna Caufield and Jackson Reed.

Brianna loved Jackson with all her heart when they were teenagers. However, life, circumstances and the enticement of a pro football career shatters her dreams of marriage and a family. She doesn’t let the loss keep her down. She finishes school and starts a youth center for the kids in her hometown.

Mary Manners has written a book with a lot of depth and meaning. She deals with young love, loss and healing. Through Brianna and Jackson’s lives, she shows how others are affected by decisions that were taken out of their hands, how faith is so necessary to life and how forgiveness is crucial to being able to move on and forward in life.

I enjoyed Promises Renewed  because, unlike novellas which only give a small snapshot of the characters, a novel tells the complete story. We’re able to understand decisions made, even if we don’t agree with them and we come to care genuinely for the individuals concerned.

Promises Renewed is book 5 of The Potter’s House Books. There are currently five of 21 available, this one being released on the 22nd of May; the others will be released through 2019. Each book is a standalone and is designed so they can be read in any order you wish.

I received this book from the author, Mary Manners. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Publisher’s Summary

A heartbreaking secret stands between Brianna and Jackson, and she plans to keep it that way…

When Brianna Caufield hosts an online auction to raise money for her fledgling youth center, the last thing she expects is to be matched for a date with Jackson Reed. Lured by the fame of an NFL career, the hometown hero and all-star quarterback broke off their engagement without so much as a backward glance. Now, washed-up and wiser, Jack’s come home with renewed faith and a changed heart—and he wants Brianna back. No matter how much she still cares for Jackson,

Brianna knows the secret she harbors will destroy any chance of a future together. Can Jack find a way to coax the secret to the surface? And if he does, will forgiveness draw them closer together…or will their love be shattered?

The Reluctant Groom (Brides of Seattle Book 1) by Kimberly Rose Johnson

My Review

Kimberly Rose Johnson’s book, The Reluctant Groom, is book one in the Brides of Seattle series, which begins with a curious premise. Ray O’Brien’s grandfather stipulated, in his will, that Ray must be married before his twenty-eighth birthday. If not, he loses ownership of his gym.

Katie Fairchild is losing her apartment because her best friend is getting married. One day, without thinking, she off-handedly comments to Ray that he could marry her.

A marriage of convenience is not something you usually read about in a contemporary novel. However, Johnson has written a believable and plausible story.

When you throw in a snobbish future mother-in-law for Katie, a darling precocious niece for Ray, Katie’s absentee mom and the pressure of having to marry for Ray, you get a myriad of feelings – from confusion and fear to frustration and anger. It all becomes a perfect recipe for disaster. Yet, somehow it all works out when God is first and foremost.

The Reluctant Groom is a sweet story, but not without its sadness, too. Johnson has done a great job of writing likable, relatable characters in a tale typically reserved for historical fiction. I can’t wait to read future books in the series.

I received the book from the author. However, I was under no obligation to write a review.

Publisher’s Summary

When everything goes wrong, can two friends discover true love?

When Ray O’Brien’s world is turned upside down, Katie Fairchild wants to help, but the personal cost is high. Neither desires a marriage of convenience, but when Katie blurts the first thing that comes to her mind Ray can’t dismiss her offer of marriage. It would solve all his problems except for one thing—they aren’t in love.

Can these two friends team up for the greater good and perhaps find love along the way, or are their expectations impossible?

Date Night

Date Night

About the Book

Ethan Miller’s family has done…what?

His profile is plastered on MingleInFaith.com. Now, this career focused, happy-to-be-a-bachelor is forced to endure an episode of speed-dating.

Interior Designer Natalie Gibbs is on the dating circuit, eager to find “the one,” but she has strict rules about the manner in which she’ll embrace a romantic relationship. She wasn’t even supposed to meet Ethan Miller—but God had other plans.

Ethan spends a month each year in Honduras, offering eye care to the underprivileged. He senses a sweetness to Natalie that prompts him to invite her along on the next mission trip.

The voyage leads them far from their home base of New York City, but straight into the hearts of the Honduran people. Slowly, Ethan’s heart is swayed toward the idea of love. But Natalie’s mission work teaches her about a love that reaches far beyond romance.

What’s God’s plan? Should their hearts combine—or does He want them to serve…and learn…from one another—and an extraordinary date night?

My Review

Natalie Gibbs, an interior designer, is looking for her soulmate, even though she has no real time to date, she decides, after much urging from her assistant, Peggy March, to sign up for a Christian site called MingleInFaith.com. However, she puts together very firm guidelines for her possible date.

Ethan Miller, a single guy, is badgered by his family to find a nice Christian girl and “settle down.” He would like to get married eventually, but right now all he wants to do is continue with his life as is. His life consists of a busy ophthalmology practice and yearly, month-long mission trips to Honduras where he gives free eye care to the underprivileged there.

How Natalie and Ethan meet is a neat twist to the “date night” concept and sets up a unique story of stepping out of your comfort zone and following God’s lead.

Date Night is a fun read that offers reaffirmation to all singles trying to live their lives as God wants.

Marianne Evans’ book is dedicated to all Christ-centered singles everywhere.
