A Cat named Whiskers

We lost our cat a few days ago. We had her for almost 11 years. She developed cancer and was not responding to treatment and in lots of pain. She had lost weight and wasn’t eating so we decided the humane thing to do was let her go.
It was a very difficult decision, especially for the g’daughter. She’d grown up with the cat. Whiskers was a rescue cat that we had gotten when she was a tiny kitten. She was somewhat aloof, as is cats wont, and had gorgeous ocean blue eyes.
I was surprised at how much it hurt me to let her go. I knew that I would miss her but never dreamed I would to the extent that I have. O, the buckets of tears that g’daughter and I have cried.
Yesterday we went looking at kittens from the local shelter and fell in love with a 3 year old beauty. She looks to have Siamese in that she has a lot of gray, but she has a calico look too, with peach, tan and orange. She too, has pretty blue eyes albeit lighter than Whiskers.
We got the call today that we were approved to be her new family. G’daughter is very excited except she’s afraid this will mean less time with the new cat because of her age.
Although I know a pet isn’t the same as losing a family member, it’s really been hard for g’daughter. She’s had a lot of loss in her life-my Mom, her great-great aunts, her great uncle, her great grandmother, 2 cousins and several of our friends. She was close to all of the people she lost and as she grieved and grieves for her Whiskers I think she’s grieving for all her losses, too; and knows there are more on the horizon.
I keep thinking of this verse and though losing a pet isn’t as bad or life altering as other events it is sad.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:32-33.

And now as time goes on we’ll be less and less grief stricken and a new cat will help ease the pain just as Christ helps heal the pain of the loss of family and friends.
